since the folks @gotosocial use matrix as their chat I tested a few Matrix homeservers and settled on @matrix's Dendrite golang implementation:

Running it on the same small VPS I'm using for gotosocial as a test, will eventually rearrange things.

Liked conduit.rs (written in Rust) but for now settled on Dendrite
